Before you start

Step 1

Lay the square face-up on a flat surface, points oriented as a diamond or square — pick one and stay consistent.

Starting orientation decides which edges show in the pocket.

  1. Lay the square flat.
  2. For presidential, start as a square aligned to the table.
  3. Keep the nicer face up if one side is better.

Adjust the height so a small band will show above the pocket.

  3. Lift so corners drape down.

  2. Push the base down to anchor.
  3. Fluff the top into a soft dome.

Adjust symmetry — center the fold and tidy stray corners.

  2. Very stiff decorative squares. May only work as presidential.
  3. Casual T-shirt looks. Pocket squares are for jackets/blazers.

  • Do not starch delicate silk.
  • Avoid stuffing so much that you stretch or tear the pocket.
