How to Clean a Carpet

Read one step at a time — finish each before the next. Wall-to-wall carpet holds dirt you can't see — vacuuming alone isn't a deep clean. This guide walks you through vacuum → pre-treat → clean → extract → dry in order. Start with the 30-second preflight. Pick your situation below: everyday refresh, pet accident, or set-in stain. Wool or antique rug? Skip the machine branch and read the wool-safe notes first.

What needs cleaning?

Most rooms use the six-step path. Jump to a branch for specific stains.

Start hereSix-step deep clean for one room

Before you start

Four quick checks — one picture.

YES to all four — then start Step 1.

Illustration: vacuum towels open window and synthetic carpet checks all green
  1. Vacuum + cleaner ready? Towels and spray on hand.
  2. Windows can open? You need airflow to dry.
  3. Not wool or silk? Use wool-safe pro — not this machine path.
  4. Can move furniture or walk paths? If no, ask someone to help.
Step 1

Vacuum the entire room — slow and overlapping.

Two slow passes — with-grain, then against the pile.

Vacuum making overlapping passes on carpet pile
  1. Move small furniture or vacuum around it.
  2. Use crevice tool along baseboards.
  3. Empty the vacuum canister halfway — full bags lose suction.
Step 2

Pre-treat every visible stain before wet cleaning.

Blot from outside in — never scrub wet stains.

White towel blotting a carpet stain without rubbing
  1. Spray spot cleaner; wait 5–10 minutes.
  2. Blot with a clean white towel.
  3. Repeat until towel stops picking up color.
Step 3

Test your cleaner in a hidden corner.

Closet corner or under a sofa leg — wait 10 minutes.

Small hidden carpet corner with test patch of cleaner
  1. Apply a quarter-sized amount.
  2. Blot and check towel for dye transfer.
  3. If color bleeds, switch to plain water rinse only.

Wool carpet: Use wool-safe shampoo only — no regular grocery-store "oxy" formulas.

Step 4

Apply cleaner and work in sections.

Far wall first — finish at the door so you don't walk on wet carpet.

Soft brush agitating carpet foam in a grid section
  1. Machine: pull trigger to spray, release to suck up.
  2. Manual: light foam — too much soap leaves sticky residue.
  3. Overlap each pass by two inches.
Step 5

Extract until water runs clearer.

Extra dry passes remove soap that attracts new dirt.

Carpet extractor pulling dirty water into tank
  1. Make slow passes — rushing leaves water in the pad.
  2. Empty dirty tank when half full.
  3. Hand-clean edges the machine misses with towels.
Step 6

Dry with airflow — keep off the carpet 6–12 hours.

Carpet should feel dry at the base — not cool and damp.

Box fan pointed across freshly cleaned carpet
  1. Open windows or run fans.
  2. Put aluminum foil under furniture legs on damp areas.
  3. Vacuum again lightly once fully dry.

If it's a pet stainUrine, vomit, or mud — order matters

Use when the spot is fresh or still smells after a normal clean.

Step 1

Blot up liquid — then rinse with plain water.

Remove solids with a spoon first — don't press into pile.

Paper towels blotting wet pet stain on carpet
  1. Blot until barely damp.
  2. Pour a cup of water, blot again.
  3. Skip vinegar on fresh urine — it can set odor.
Step 2

Apply enzyme cleaner and cover with a towel.

Enzymes break down proteins — regular soap won't.

Enzyme spray saturating carpet spot under weighted towel
  1. Saturate the spot and one inch beyond.
  2. Weight the towel for 15–30 minutes.
  3. Then run Start here Steps 4–6 on the room.

If it's wine or coffeeOld stains need more dwell time

Use for tannin stains that brown over time.

Step 1

Blot, then apply cold water and blot again.

Heat sets tannin stains — never use hot water.

Red wine spill being blotted on light carpet
  1. Work from the edge toward center.
  2. Alternate water and blotting.
  3. Don't rub — it spreads the stain.
Step 2

Use a spot treatment, then full-room extract.

Stubborn spots may need two cleaning cycles.

Spot cleaner applied to coffee stain on carpet
  1. Wait full dwell time on the label.
  2. Extract the whole room — soap left in pad wicks back up.
  3. If stain remains, pro color repair may be needed.

When to call a professional

  • Ask a family member if moving furniture or running a heavy machine feels unsafe.
  • Call a carpet pro if stains return after two full cleaning cycles or colors look bleached.
  • Stop and ventilate if chemical smell is strong or you feel dizzy.
  • Antique, silk, or wool wall-to-wall may need specialist cleaning — don't rent a standard machine.

When This Doesn't Work

  1. Stain reappears in 48 hours: Soap or water left in the pad — re-extract with plain water only.
  2. Colors look uneven after drying: Too much agitation on berber loop — pro cleaning may be needed.
  3. Musty smell returns: Pad may still be wet underneath — lift a corner if possible and fan-dry 24 hours.
  4. Antique or silk rug: Don't use a rental machine — call a rug specialist.

Warnings

  • Never mix ammonia and bleach — toxic fumes.
  • Don't over-wet — pad mold starts in 24–48 hours on soaked carpet.
  • Test every new product in a hidden spot first.
  • Unplug extraction machines before emptying tanks.

Tips

  • Clean carpets on a dry, mild day — A/C helps humidity control.
  • Rent machines early morning — tanks are cleaner and lines aren't clogged.
  • Put doormats outside and inside every entry — cuts cleaning frequency in half.

FAQ

How often should I deep-clean carpet?

Every 12–18 months for a home without pets; every 6 months with pets or allergies.

Can I use a steam mop on carpet?

Only if the manufacturer labels it safe for carpet — most steam mops are for hard floors and can over-wet pad.

Why does my carpet feel crunchy after cleaning?

Soap residue — run an extraction pass with plain water only, then dry thoroughly.
